Pepper Spray for Personal Protection
There are a variety of chemical agents designed as pepper spray products available to choose from. We highly recommend assessing the pros and cons chemical self-defense products before making a purchase:
Each delivery method has pro’s and cons. Below are some considerations for potential pepper spray canisters that involve the deliver methods of stream and foam-gel.
Pepper Spray Canister with Disabling Bracelet Cord
The the DeFuser pepper spray product has a disabling bracelet cord should the canister be taken away from you during a struggle. The pepper spray canister becomes inoperable and the pull cord must be reinserted for it to operate again. This product overcomes the concern about the risk of the spray being used directly against you. This 2.5 ounce or 60 gram canister has an advertised range of 10 feet but realistically expect a range of 6 feet or 2 meters. Expect a single spurt from this canister.
Stream Pepper Spray
The Stream delivery method is similar to a thin ‘stream’ of water coming out of a hose that makes it almost impossible to hit a moving target/assailant in the face who is attacking you. Splatter stream delivered pepper spray has less chance to blow back on you in mild wind conditions. The splatter stream works well for a single target in outdoor conditions. Canisters have a safety to prevent accidental discharge. This .54 ounce or 15 gram canister has an advertised range of approximately 10 feet but realistically expect a range of 6 feet or 2 meters. Expect a single use with a short spurt from this canister.

3 oz Pepper Spray Stream
Cone Pepper Spray
The Cone or Cloud method is in the shape of a funnel or cone which makes it easier to hit a moving target/assailant because you do not need to accurately hit him in the face. The pepper spray also spreads out over a greater distance but is slightly slower to disperse than the stream. It is more effective against a charging or group assailants or dogs. But if it is sprayed into the wind, the chemicals will blow back and may affect you instead.
Foam or Gel Pepper Spray
The Foam or Gel spray delivery method is usually a thick semi-liquid stream like pepper spray that sticks to what it makes contact with. Sometimes staining dyes are mixed into the foam for suspect identification. Foam may be more effective against a charging suspect or one wearing glasses, but often has less range than the stream method. This delivery method has a better interior deployment effect. The foam or gel will have less environmental contamination that the stream and cone delivery methods when deployed inside a building, which may not severely contaminating an entire room. This canister is about 1.6 ounce or 50 grams with an advertised range of approximately 18 feet or 5 meters, but expect about 10 feet or 3 meters. Expect one to two short bursts from this canister.
1.6 oz Pepper Spray Gel Canister
4 oz Pepper Spray Gel Canister
Pepper Spray Dye and Foam
This canister sprays a stream or foaming red, green, or blue “Witness Chemical Identifier” dye and upon contact. The mixed dye and pepper spray foams or gels will stick all over any object it is lands upon. This spray canister was originally developed by “Dye Witness” in the late 1990’s and was designed for the purpose of identifying and prosecuting assailants who are rebuffed during an attack. The purpose is to make the assailant easier to identify and less able to mingle among others without raising suspicion, which may allow law enforcement officers to place the assailant at the scene of the attack if reported to the police. This 1.5 ounce canister has an advertised range of approximately 12 feet or 4 meters, but expect 6 feet or 2 meters. Also expect a single use with a short spurt from this canister.
