Model Mugging Self-Defense on Oprah
Oprah Winfrey’s staff queried 150 self-defense programs around the country and chose Matt Thomas, founder of Model Mugging, to appear on her show in February 1999.
While on the show, Matt Thomas and Oprah Winfrey discussed having the courage to do something and take personal action toward learning self-protection in order to feel stronger and have more options. They emphasized it is important to trust your instincts and to have an idea of what you may do. Matt and Oprah demonstrated the “Freeze Walk” together (photo below) and the de-escalating combination. They discussed what you do mentally can be just as important as what someone does physically. Michelle Kaimann and Gordon Wolfe demonstrated some techniques in slow motion from a frontal confrontation, grab from behind, and being pinned on the back and stomach.
After the commercial break, Oprah and Matt discussed strategies against an attack regarding waiting for the right moment and learning the necessary tools. Oprah mentioned striking the testicles was compared to striking and kicking to an assailant’s head to knock him unconscious. Model Mugging students are taught in class to continue kicking until the whistle is blown (by the female instructor). They also briefly discussed not being taken to a second crime scene.
